Based on an original drawing by the Italian multi artist Leonardo da Vinci this pedestrian bridge was raised on the highway E-18 outside of Oslo, Norway in 2001. The Norwegian artist Vebjoern Sand took initiative for the bridge. Leonardo da Vinci originally made the drawing for the Turk sultan Bajazel II, who wanted to build a bridge over “The Golden Horn” at the Bospurus strait. The length was to be 240 m long, but the building of the bridge was never carried out. The bridge of to day is 108 m long and is made of tree material. Source http://www.johanson.info/leonardo
Ever since the great architectural masterpiece was built in 2001 I wanted to capture its beauty, but I never got my head clear on how to photograph it in a respectful way in manners of justifying its magnitude and subtle linework. The main issue is as follows; when photographed in clear weather there´s a lot of details on the surrounding areas stealing attention from the bridge. Dull houses, dull fields, electricity lines and a gasoline station. I tried a couple of times, going at it from different angles, at different times of the day, but never got any interesting material that justified the piece of art that this is.
Then one day, accidental really, I was on my way to an early morning shoot doing real estate photography when I noticed that the morning fog was extremely thick. Suddenly it hit me, this is the perfect conditions to get my desired shot of the bridge. Having been there many times before I had a clear idea what angle promoted the beautiful lines the way I intended to show them. I made my detour, popped out of the car and within 2 – 3 minutes I got exactly what I was striving for. The fog isolated the bridge from its surroundings and made it stand out as a lone object, just the way I wanted!
I like the how the light is subtle, harmonizing with the sleek lines of the bridge. For balance in the image I gave it just enough depth and the right exposure to pull in the tree visible to the right of the bridge!
Later on this has shown to be one of my best reputated images so far, scoring me honorable mentions in global contests and hanging on the walls of many of my art photo customers.
